Newcastle, also commonly referred to as Greater Newcastle (locally / ˈ nj uː k ɑː s əl / NEW-kah-səl; Awabakal: Mulubinba) [4] is a large metropolitan area and the second-most-populous such area of New South Wales, Australia.
The Winder family moved to Campbell House [9] located on Campbell’s Hill (Maitland, NSW). On 7 April 1840, this house (“Windermere”) was advertised for sale. [9] The position on a hill in this advertisement was described as an advantage as the area had recent flooding described as an “annoyance” and “detrimental to the town”. [9]
The Hill is an inner city, residential suburb of Newcastle, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, located immediately south of Newcastle's central business district. [ 2 ] [ 6 ] The Hill is filled with historic Victorian terraces and is the site of a historic convict prison block.
With the industrialization of Newcastle, for most of the 20th century, it was dominated by the Honeysuckle railway workshops, wool stores, cargo sheds and warehouses. [4] In 1992, the Honeysuckle Development Corporation was established by the NSW government in order to manage the urban development of the area. [3]
Newcastle East is home to two of Newcastle's beaches, Nobbys Beach and Newcastle Beach, both of which have surf lifesaving clubs and are patrolled by lifesavers. In June 2007, the bulk carrier Pasha Bulker grounded itself off Nobbys Beach in a storm. Between Newcastle and Nobbys beaches lie the Newcastle Ocean Baths.
