Founded in 1855 by the abolitionist and Augusta College graduate John Gregg Fee (1816–1901), Berea College admitted both black and white students in a fully integrated curriculum, making it the first non-segregated, coeducational college in the South and one of a handful of institutions of higher learning to admit both male and female students in the mid-19th century. Lincoln Institute was an all-black boarding high school in Shelby County, Kentucky from 1912 to 1966. The school was created by the trustees of Berea College after the Day Law passed the Kentucky Legislature in 1904. It put an end to the racially integrated education at Berea that had lasted since the end of the Civil War.
William Goodell Frost (July 2, 1854 – September 11, 1938) was an American educator who served as the third president of Berea College from 1890 to 1920, and a scholar of the Greek language. He is credited with coining the phrase " Appalachian American."
