Fish Creek flows throughout its length, joining the Bow River on the east side of the park, and there is an artificial lake that offers swimming. With more than 100 kilometres (62 mi) of paved and unpaved trails, the park is a popular area for hiking and biking, as well as for picnicking, swimming, fishing, and observing wildlife.

It is located in the southeast quadrant of the city, within the Fish Creek Provincial Park, and is part of the Bow River basin. It lies at an elevation of 1,005 m (3,297 ft) and has a surface of 0.4 km 2 (40 ha; 99 acres). [1] First opened in late summer 1978, it is a swimming area open during the summer as a public beach.

Fish Creek, a short creek that flows from Little Kenosee Lake to Kenosee Lake had been blocked when the main road, Highway 209, through the park was built. Part of the water level restoration project was to build culverts to allow the creek to flow again. Between 2008 and 2013, lake water levels rose 9 feet (2.74 m).
