Immaculata Academy was established in 1928 by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph and closed June 2016. [2] More than 4,200 girls attended the school during this time. [3] While functioning, the school was the "sister school" to St. Francis High School.
In the fall of 1928, 11 students were enrolled in Our Lady of Mercy Academy, originally created as a boarding school for young women. [3] By the end of the year, there would be 30 students comprising the 8th and 9th grades. [3] The fourth-floor of the building housed the Sisters of Mercy novitiate, housing young women studying to become nuns. [4]
Immaculata Seminary was opened by the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in 1905 in the Tenleytown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. . After plans were made to close the school and sell the campus to American University in 1984, a group of parents successfully sued the Sisters of Providence in order to keep the school open.
Immaculate High School, established in 1962, enrolls 400 to 500 male and female students. As of 2021, the school offers 16 different Advanced Placement (AP) courses with 132 students enrolled in at least one AP or equivalent course.
