I've been happy using Classic Start / Shell on all my PCs. However, recently I noticed logins on my 5 year old Dell laptop were taking 10 secs - see Slow Login Troubleshooting. I've reduced the login delay to an acceptable 4 secs by disabling the option "Pre-cache icons" in Classic Shell / General Behaviour.
