[1] Their first studio album, We Are Messengers, was released in 2016 through Word Records and Curb Records. The album hit the top 10 on Billboard album charts and top 15 on the Billboard Heatseeker charts.

Banks started the Messengers in 1972 after he left The Jackson Southernaires. While with the Jackson Southernaires, Banks made his first big hit in 1964 on Peacock Records with the song "Too Late".
