Area codes 705, 249, and 683 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for most of northeastern and central Ontario in Canada. Area code 705 was created in a 1956 area code split from portions of the 613 and 519 numbering plan areas.
Telephone numbers in Canada follow the fixed-length format of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) of a three-digit area code, a three-digit central office code (or exchange code), and a four-digit station or line code. This is represented as NPA NXX XXXX. [1]
Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits 0 and 1 in the leading position. [1] Area codes with two identical trailing digits are easily recognizable codes (ERC). NPAs with 9 in the second position are reserved for future format expansion.

The northern two thirds of Alberta, including Edmonton, received area code 780, while leaving 403 to serve Calgary and southern Alberta. The projected exhaust dates for area codes 403 and 780 were March and October 2009, respectively. In 1997, two area codes, 587 and 825, were reserved by Bellcore for Alberta. [1]
Area code 780 is also the last new area code in Canada to be introduced by a split. Within a decade, area code 780 was close to exhaustion once again, along with area 403 in the south. The solution for mitigation was to implement a complex overlay for the entire province, extending over both numbering plan areas, with the new area code 587.
In 1957, parts of 519 and 613 formed area code 705. An exhaustion study for area code 519 in the 1990s resulted in a recommendation to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to add a second area code, 226, to the numbering plan area. In 1992, an overlay relief plan was approved (Telecom Decision CRTC 2002-25).
