Gilberts is located in northern Kane County. Most of the village is in Rutland Township, with a small portion crossing to the east into Dundee Township. The village limits extend north to the McHenry County line. Gilberts is bordered to the east by the village of West Dundee and the city of Elgin.

Pingree Grove is located in northern Kane County. Neighboring communities are Hampshire to the west, Huntley to the north, Gilberts to the northeast, and the city of Elgin to the southeast. U.S. Route 20 passes through the village, leading northwest 17 miles (27 km) to Marengo and southeast 7 miles (11 km) into Elgin.
The original town of Gilbertsville was founded in 1871 near the Tennessee River as "Clear Pond", named for a nearby lake. In 1874 it was incorporated and renamed "Gilbertsville" in honor of Jesse C. Gilbert, who served as a Kentucky state senator from 1871 to 1875. [4]
