It was founded in 1885 in Boston by Edwin Ginn and Daniel Collamore Heath [2] and was later located at 125 Spring Street in Lexington, Massachusetts. [3] From 1966 to 1995 the firm was owned by Raytheon. When Raytheon exited the textbook market, it sold the company to Houghton Mifflin.
Houghton Mifflin acquired Harcourt in 2007. It incorporated the Harcourt name to form Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. As of 2012, all Harcourt books that have been re-released are under the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt name. The Harcourt Children's Books division left the name intact on all of its books under that name as part of HMH.
It was formerly known as Houghton Mifflin Company, but it changed its name following the 2007 acquisition of Harcourt Publishing. [10] Prior to March 2010, it was a subsidiary of Education Media and Publishing Group Limited, an Irish-owned holding company registered in the Cayman Islands and formerly known as Riverdeep .
[3] The books share a distinctive non-linear format in which the printed main narrative and color illustrations are juxtaposed with elaborate marginal content. Handwritten asides add context to the story and explore side topics, and sketched illustrations enrich both the main story line and the marginal notes.
George Harrison Mifflin (1845 - 1921) was an executive in the publishing business. He served as president of Houghton Mifflin. [1] Mifflin was born in Boston. [2] He graduated from Harvard. He joined Hurd and Houghton in 1867 [3] and worked for its subsidiary Riverside Press. [4] He partnered with Henry Oscar Houghton in 1872. [3]
