Despite widely variable intervals between meals or the occasional consumption of meals with a substantial carbohydrate load, human blood glucose levels tend to remain within the normal range. However, shortly after eating, the blood glucose level may rise, in non-diabetics, temporarily up to 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL) or slightly more.
Levels which are significantly above or below this range are problematic and can in some cases be dangerous. A level of <70 mg/dL (<3.8 mmol/L) is usually described as a hypoglycemic attack (low blood sugar). Most diabetics know when their hypoglycemic and usually are able to eat food or drink something sweet to raise their levels.
When hypoglycemia occurs in the absence of such symptoms it is called hypoglycemic unawareness. Especially in people with long-standing type 1 diabetes and those who attempt to maintain glucose levels which are closer to normal, hypoglycemic unawareness is common.
In most cases, all effects are reversed when normal glucose levels are restored. There are uncommon cases of more persistent harm, and rarely even death due to severe hypoglycemia of this type.
