La Quinta High School was founded in 1963, "the fifth" high school to be founded in the Garden Grove Unified School District. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, La Quinta gained notoriety for expressed racial tensions between those of Asian and Hispanic/Latino descent.

La Quinta High School was built in 1994 but fully completed by 1996. In its first year it had an enrollment of approximately 600 students with only grades 9-10 and in 1998, with grades 9-12, it now exceeds 3,000 students making it the largest high school in the Coachella Valley.
It was formed in July 1965 from the merger of three districts: the Garden Grove Elementary School District (established 1875 [5]), the Alamitos School District (1880s) and the Garden Grove Union High School District (1921). In 2004, the district received the Broad Prize for Urban Education. Twice before, it had been a Broad Prize finalist. [6]
