The West Virginia Educational Standards Test (WESTEST) is a criterion-referenced test measured student's knowledge of the West Virginia Content Standards. It is designed to meet NCLB requirements. Tests are administered in Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Reading/Language Arts in grades 3-11. [1]
The top-scoring students in each county receive the award. Each county has at least two winners. The exam tests student knowledge on West Virginia citizenship, civics and government, economics, geography, history and current events. Since 2008, all eighth grade students take a test online to show their knowledge of West Virginia's history.
The scores are scaled and do not correlate to the percentage of correct answers (a passing score of 400 does not indicate a student got 66% of the questions correct). Each test has its own scale and may not be the same as another SOL test. [6] For students in grades 7–8, SOL scores are correlated to Lexile measures. [7]
The official logo of the TAKS test. Mainly based on the TAAS test's logo. The Dale–Chall readability formula is a readability test that provides a numeric gauge of the comprehension difficulty that readers come upon when reading a text. It uses a list of 3000 words that groups of fourth-grade American students could reliably understand, considering any word not on that list to be difficult.
It was designed by noted Ohio architect Frank Packard (1866–1923), and built in 1917, making it one of the oldest school buildings in West Virginia. It remains the largest high school campus in the state. Later additions included Stadium Field and the Field House, a multi-story gymnasium. [7]
