Regarding protocols/questions: I mostly mean that I would research as much as possible about what other clinics in the country are doing to positively impact success rates for women who are 40+. For instance, I read somewhere that harvesting eggs slightly sooner for 40+ patients can result in embryos of higher quality.

Typically it’s one or two embryos. If there are remaining embryos you can freeze them. If you don’t get pregnant with the fresh transfer your can always opt to have the frozen ones implanted at a later date. Or if you do get pregnant and decide you want another sibling for your baby- you can use your frozen embryos.

I'm having an IVF baby. My understanding, after a heck of a lot of medical research, conversations with midwives, obs, ob registrars, and a shared care doctor, is that after 40 weeks the placenta does start to degrade but this happens in almost every pregnancy.
December 2018. As a 39 year old when I began IVF, I found myself discouraged by statistics my Doctor gave me as well as what I read online. We had no issues uncovered, no cause found for my infertility. One retrieval, the 11 eggs they got ultimately lead to 1 PGS chromosomally normal 5 day blastocyst.
I was supposed to stop estrogen and progesterone injections at 12 weeks, but ran out of meds a few days before. I'm 14 weeks now and no complications.
