The first internal line (known as the Spanisch Brötli Bahn) was a 16 km (9.9 mi) line opened from Zürich to Baden in 1847, operated by the Swiss Northern Railway. By 1860 railways connected western and northeastern Switzerland but the Alps remained an insurmountable barrier for railways, which need low gradients.
