Toyota Motor Corporation's R family is a family of 5-speed RWD/4WD transmissions built by Aisin. They share much in common (such as the bell housing -to-body bolt patterns) with the Aisin AR transmission (rebadged MA-5 by GM, AX-15 by Jeep, and Isuzu AR5)
The bell housing bolt pattern for the old AMC 196 Straight-6 engine is the same as for the more modern early 199 and 232 (used from 1964 to 1971), but the 196 had different dowel pin sizes. AMC's 1956 to 1966 V8s used a different bell housing bolt pattern that was slightly larger in diameter than the six cylinder bell.
A common truck transmission, this was the successor to the W56. Like the W56, it came in both 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive versions. This model appears to have a combination of ratios used in older models of the W-series. 1st and 2nd are low ratios like in the W56 for use to get a heavy vehicle moving.
