"Metal Guru" is a song by the British rock band T. Rex, written by Marc Bolan. It was the band's fourth (and final) number one on the UK Singles Chart when it topped the chart for four weeks from May–June 1972.
The second single "Metal Guru" was released in May 1972 and charted in the United Kingdom for fourteen weeks, giving the group its fourth number 1. [ 15 ] [ 16 ] However, it did not chart in the United States.
From 1970 to 1973, T. Rex were extremely popular in the UK, with a run of eleven top ten singles, four of which reached number one: "Hot Love", "Get It On", "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru". The band's 1971 album Electric Warrior received critical acclaim, reached number 1 in the UK and became a landmark album in glam rock.
"Telegram Sam" was the first single to be issued by Marc Bolan's own T.Rex Wax Co. label, released on 21 January 1972. The UK b-side featured two songs, "Cadilac" (as printed on the EMI label of the original single) and "Baby Strange", the latter also included in the album The Slider.
In 1988, Spanish heavy metal band Ángeles del Infierno included a cover of the song on their 1988 album 666. [43] In 1990, Glam rock tribute band The Metal Gurus released a cover of the song as a B-Side for their single "Merry Xmas Everybody", another Slade cover. The single was produced by Holder and Lea, and reached No. 55 in the UK.
Dinaw Mengestu's 2017 novel The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears was originally published in the UK as Children of the Revolution, and includes lyrics from the song within the story. In 2014, Sonic Youth vocalist and guitarist Thurston Moore named "Children of the Revolution" as one of his 25 favourite songs.
