St. Joseph was first platted in 1829, and the first lighthouse at the site, located on the shore, was built in 1832. Construction began on harbor piers in 1836, and by 1848 a beacon light had been established on the pier. The onshore lighthouse was replaced in 1859, and a new pierhead beacon was constructed on the south pier in 1870.
It joins Malpica with Finisterre along the coastline linking the lighthouses and landmarks along the way. The name of the route refers to the numerous lighthouses built on the Costa da Morte during the 19th and 20th centuries to make navigation safer. The route is divided into eight segments, averaging 26 kilometres (16 mi).
1990: Major restoration allowed for the repair of the tower both internally and externally. The light was reopened and relit. The skeleton tower (seen in photo to right) on the shoreline was removed. 1994: Property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; 2007: The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation and hosts a museum.
On May 18, 1826, the congress authorized $3,500 for a lighthouse at the east end of Sandy Neck, at a point known as Beach Point. In a show of support, Barnstable sold a two-acre parcel of real estate for just one dollar to construct the lighthouse. On October 1, 1826, the Sandy Neck Lighthouse, which cost $2,911 then, went into service. [1]
