Portugal have reached the semi-finals on five occasions, and reached the final as hosts in 2004, however losing to the heavy tournament underdogs Greece. They captured their first major tournament win after defeating hosts France 1–0 in the final of Euro 2016 .
Portugal is the first ever winner of the UEFA Nations League, topping their group against Italy and Poland, knocking out Switzerland in the semi-finals and beating the Netherlands in the final. They couldn't retain the trophy in the next season after finishing second to France in the group stage.
Portugal have played against teams from every confederation. Their first international match was played on 18 December 1921 in Madrid against Spain , losing 3–1. [ 13 ] The team they have faced the most often is also Spain, with a total of 40 matches played.
