Carterville is a city in Williamson County, Illinois, United States. At the 2020 census, the city's population was 5,848. The city is part of the Carbondale-Marion-Herrin combined statistical area and has grown considerably as a residential community of Carbondale and Marion. The city is located next to Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.
Dewmaine was an unincorporated African-American coal-mining community in Williamson County, Illinois. Today the area is almost completely non-residential and vacant land, though it now sits at the northern edge of Carterville. Its name is an amalgamation of Admiral Dewey and the USS Maine from the Spanish–American War. [2]

[2] Williamson County is included in the Carbondale-Marion, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area of Southern Illinois is known locally as "Little Egypt". [citation needed]
The station was assigned the call sign WYGF on 1991-02-22. On 1991-12-27, the station changed its call sign to WEZS, on 1993-09-10 to WXLT, and on 2001-03-19 to the current WUEZ.
