The Johannesburg Central Business District, commonly called Johannesburg CBD, is one of the main business centres of Johannesburg, South Africa.It is the densest collection of skyscrapers in Africa, however, due to white flight and urban blight, many of the buildings are unoccupied as tenants have left for more secure locations in the Northern Suburbs, in particular Sandton and Rosebank.
The Carlton Centre is a 50-storey skyscraper and shopping centre located on Commissioner Street in central Johannesburg, South Africa.At 223 metres (732 ft), it was the tallest building in Africa for 46 years from its completion in 1973 until 2019.
Johannesburg’s historic old fort stands in Kotzi Street on Hospital Hill, to the north of the city centre. In 1896 the Government of the South African Republic decided to build a fort round the existing prison. The prison was built already in 1892 and enlarged in 1894. The fort was completed in 1899 and handed over to the State Artillery.
The first Carlton Hotel was located two blocks away, at the corner of Eloff Street & Commissioner Street. Conceived in 1895 by mining magnate Barney Barnato as a huge, world-class luxury hotel with a theater, construction was finally begun by Barnato's heirs in 1903, without the theater, after delays caused by Barnato's death and the Boer War.
