Amsterdam is a village in northwestern Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 436 at the 2020 census . The community was founded by Dutch immigrant David Johnson and named after the city of Amsterdam , Netherlands. [ 5 ]
Amsterdam had its start when the National Road was extended to that point. [1] The town was laid out in 1830. [2] An old variant name of the community was Melgen. [3] A post office called Melgen was established in 1888, and remained in operation until 1901. [4]

State Route 43 (SR 43) is a mainly north–south state highway that runs through the northeastern quadrant of the U.S. state of Ohio.Its southern terminus is at a signalized intersection with State Route 7 along the Ohio River in Steubenville, and its western terminus is approximately 123 miles (198 km) to the north at Public Square in Cleveland.
From its northern terminus at Westergasfabriek to Strawinskylaan, near Amsterdam Zuid railway station, tram line 5 operates in a combination of mixed traffic and tram-and-bus-only lanes. One exception is a short section of off-street track east of Leidseplein along the Leidsebosje park. [4]
