Simple Minds originated from the punk band Johnny & The Self-Abusers, formed in early 1977 on Glasgow's South Side, [11] as the brainchild of Alan Cairnduff. Cairnduff left the organisation of the band to John Milarky, suggesting that he enlist two strangers, singer and lyricist Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill.
The discography of the Scottish art rock–new wave band Simple Minds consists of 21 studio albums (either original or covers and counting 1981's Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call as a double album release), eleven live albums, ten compilation albums, fourteen box sets, 68 singles, and five video albums.
It was founded and funded by the successful music shop owner Bruce Findlay in the summer of 1977. After the first four single releases it secured a licensing deal with Arista Records. Findlay closed the label in 1980, to dedicate his time to managing one of the most successful bands who began there, Simple Minds.

An e-mail announcement by Simple Minds stated that Graffiti Soul was initially written on location in Rome (), Sicily, Antwerp and Glasgow ().The band then returned for the first time in almost three decades to Rockfield Studios, near Monmouth in Wales, where the group originally recorded their earlier albums Real to Real Cacophony, Empires and Dance and New Gold Dream.
