Place-name scholar William J. Watson wrote that "Greenock is well known in Gaelic as Grianáig, dative of grianág, 'a sunny knoll ' ". [3] The Scottish Gaelic place-name Grianaig is relatively common, with another Greenock near Callander in Menteith (formerly in Perthshire) and yet another at Muirkirk in Kyle, now in East Ayrshire. [4]
By 1926, Watson stated "Callander on Teith…is a transferred name from Callander near Falkirk", [9] and indeed, it is probable that from at least the 16th century, Callander was influenced by that spelling. [9] Early forms with Calen-may relate to the original name of the estate, which may have straddled the Teith. [9]
