Over that last weekend of August 1968, the first USSSA world softball tournament was played in West Allis, Wisconsin. Over the past 40 years USSSA has grown from a couple of thousand slow-pitch softball players to over 3.5 million participants playing 13 primary sports. In fact, USSSA sanctions teams and individuals in 38 sports.
The North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) is a non-profit, international association of gay and lesbian softball leagues. [1] As of 2023, NAGAAA rebranded, and currently doing business as International Pride Softball .
It is played annually in January at the Hualalai Resort Golf Club in Kaʻūpūlehu in the Kona district, and Mitsubishi Electric is the main sponsor. The field consists of the senior major champions of the last five years and other tournament winners of the last two years, plus a few sponsor invitees.
In 1964, the Hawaii Amateur was inaugurated by Arthur "Babe" Carter. It was held at Waialae Country Club through the mid-1980s. In 1987, the tournament moved to Pearl Country Club to accommodate more players. [1] The tournament has been continuously held at Pearl CC except for 1995 when the Hawaii Amateur was held at Kapolei Golf Course. [2]
