When using tidal barrages to generate power, the potential energy from a tide is seized through the strategic placement of specialized dams. When the sea level rises and the tide begins to come in, the temporary increase in tidal power is channeled into a large basin behind the dam, holding a large amount of potential energy.
Two types of Tidal Stream Generators Evopod - A semi-submerged floating approach tested in Strangford Lough with SeaGen in the background.. A tidal stream generator, often referred to as a tidal energy converter (TEC), is a machine that extracts energy from moving masses of water, in particular tides, although the term is often used in reference to machines designed to extract energy from the ...
Now we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day. At low tide the potential energy is zero. Therefore, the total energy potential per day = Energy for a single high tide × 2 = 4.5 × 10 12 J × 2 = 9 × 10 12 J. Therefore, the mean power generation potential = Energy generation potential / time in 1 day = 9 × 10 12 J / 86400 s = 104 MW
By September 2012, it had generated over 250 MWh of electricity which was supplied to the local grid. An upgraded 1 MW Deep-Gen IV turbine was developed while part of Rolls-Royce within the Reliable Data Acquisition Platform for Tidal (ReDAPT) project, partly funded by the Energy Technologies Institute . A U.S. Coast Guard boat steams past in 2021 as workers prepare to deploy a tidal turbine onto a lift arm on a platform just west of the railroad bridge on the Cape Cod Canal in Buzzards Bay.
Some of this energy can be harnessed to generate electricity to power homes, transport and industries. The term marine energy encompasses both wave power i.e. power from surface waves, and tidal power i.e. obtained from the kinetic energy of large bodies of moving water.

Unlike historical tide mills, which could operate only on an ebb tide, the Rance barrage can generate electricity on both flows of the tide, or it can be used for pumped storage, depending on demand. A less intrusive design is a 1MW free-standing turbine, constructed in 2007 at Strangford Lough Narrows; this site is close to an historic tide mill.
