A carbon dioxide scrubber is a piece of equipment that absorbs carbon dioxide (CO 2). It is used to treat exhaust gases from industrial plants or from exhaled air in life support systems such as rebreathers or in spacecraft , submersible craft or airtight chambers .
Soda lime canister used in anaesthetic machines to act as a carbon dioxide scrubber. Soda lime, a mixture of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and calcium oxide (CaO), is used in granular form within recirculating breathing environments like general anesthesia and its breathing circuit, submarines, rebreathers, and hyperbaric chambers and underwater habitats.
Flow diagram of direct air capture process using sodium hydroxide as the absorbent and including solvent regeneration An example of what Direct Air Capture could look like and how the process works. Direct air capture (DAC) is the use of chemical or physical processes to extract carbon dioxide (CO 2) directly from the ambient air. [1]
Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye and caustic soda, [1] [2] is an inorganic compound with the formula NaOH. It is a white solid ionic compound consisting of sodium cations Na + and hydroxide anions OH −. Sodium hydroxide is a highly corrosive base and alkali that decomposes lipids and proteins at ambient temperatures and may cause severe ...
Both NaOH and KOH are also used in the production of soap and detergents (saponification). Due to their hygroscopic properties, alkali hydroxides are used as desiccants . They also readily absorb carbon dioxide and are therefore used in carbon dioxide scrubbers .
NaOH (aq) ⇌ Na + (aq) + OH − (aq) When dry ice is added to water, it sublimes to carbon dioxide gas rapidly because the solution's temperature is warmer than the dry ice (-78.5 °C or -109.3°F). The carbon dioxide gas can be observed as bubbles or clouds above the solution.
Co 2+ + 2 NaOH → Co(OH) 2 + 2 Na + The compound can be prepared by reacting cobalt(II) nitrate in water with a solution of triethylamine N(C 2 H 5) 3 as both the base and a complexing agent. [3] It can also be prepared by elecrolysis of a solution of cobalt nitrate with a platinum cathode. [5]
Planting trees is a nature-based way to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere; however, the effect may only be temporary in some cases. [1] [2]Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is a process in which carbon dioxide (CO 2) is removed from the atmosphere by deliberate human activities and durably stored in geological, terrestrial, or ocean reservoirs, or in products.
