The Astana, [5] then called Government House, was built in 1870 by the second White Rajah, Charles Brooke, as a wedding gift to his wife, Margaret Alice Lili de Windt. [1] [2] [4] The couple married at Highworth, Wiltshire on 28 October 1869 and she was then raised to the title of Ranee of Sarawak with the style of Her Highness.
After Charles Brooke was proclaimed as the Rajah of Sarawak in 1868, [1] he was looking for a better venue for the administrative center of the government of Sarawak. The construction of the courthouse building started in 1868 and completed in 1874, which was then officiated by William Henry Rodway.
In 1899, a peace accord was held at the fort between local ethnic tribes orchestrated by Hose. [1] [3] [4] Fort Hose before it was destroyed by fire in 1994. In 1994, the fort was destroyed by fire and reconstructed at the same location as a replica of the original fort. On completion in 1996, the fort was converted into a museum. [4]
