The Bombay Durpun, commonly known as Bombay Durpun, Durpun or Darpan, was a bilingual language [1] newspaper published in Bombay from 1832 to 1840. [2] It was founded by Balshastri Jambhekar, a social reformer regarded as the Father of Marathi journalism. It was the first Marathi newspaper and the first issue was published on January 6, 1832.
The first Marathi newspaper, Darpan, was started on 6 January 1832 by Balshastri Jambhekar. The paper was bilingual fortnightly also published in English as The Bombay Darpan and stopped publishing in 1840. [1] [2] Founded in 1881 by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the daily Kesari was a prominent newspaper of the pre-Independence era with a large readership.
Balshastri Jambhekar had grasped correctly the importance and power of the print media in the coming times during British Rule in India. He was sure that if the British were to be overthrown and freedom was to be attained, then it was essential to awaken the masses and the print media was the most useful tool to that end.
Darpan came back to Lahore after a few years, where the film industry was then booming, and he acted in Baap Ka Gunah (1957). He had a breakthrough with his self-produced film Sathi. Raat Ke Rahi (1960), Saheli, Gulfam, Qaidi, Anchal, Baji, Shikwa, Ik Tera Sahara and Naela (1965) were some big films in which he played vital roles.
