Pudukkottai is a part of the Pudukkottai constituency and elects its member to the legislative assembly every five years; and is a part of the Lok Sabha constituency comprising Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli and Karur. As of 2011, the district had a population of 1,618,345 with a sex-ratio of 1,015 females for every 1,000 males.
