Lake Forest is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 85,858 at the 2020 census. Lake Forest incorporated as a city on December 20, 1991. Prior to incorporation, the community had been known as El Toro. [6]
Lake Forest was founded with Lake Forest College and was laid out as a town in 1857, a stop for travelers making their way south to Chicago. Before it was incorporated as Lake Forest, the whole area was called El Toro, and that was my mailing address. The name still applies to various things, for example, the El Toro Library and the El Toro Post Office.
