An outline, also called a hierarchical outline, is a list arranged to show hierarchical relationships and is a type of tree structure. An outline is used [1] to present the main points (in sentences) or topics of a given subject. Each item in an outline may be divided into additional sub-items.
This template creates a horizontal table of contents with links from A to Z (controllable) and four optional rows of links. It is intended primarily for list articles where the standard TOC would be unwieldy. The template is styled with the hlist class for accessibility and has few superfluous frills. The A–Z links do not appear by default.

The template should automatically detect the correct title of the outline article, as long as it has been named in one of the more common patterns for such articles (check the link to be sure it worked). If the template doesn't detect the correct name automatically, then add it in manually like this: {{For outline|Title of outline article}}

Ahnentafel style trees can be can be displayed using this template, but usually for fewer than six generations the customised ahnentafel templates are clearer (see Template:Ahnentafel/doc). There is also an ahnentafel template ( {{ Ahnentafel-tree }} ), that is based on this one, that makes construction this tree simpler.
