College of Defence Management, 50th anniversary stamp, 2020. The College of Defence Management had its origin in December 1970 under the name, the Institute of Defence Management (IDM), as a part of the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), with Brigadier V. Dhruva as the founder Director, for providing the Defence Services officers with modern management training.

The IDM was renamed as College of Defence Management (CDM) in 1980. The College has trained over 5,000 officers of the rank of Major to Major General and equivalents of the three Services through its on-campus programmes. The College was established in 1905 in Quetta (now in Pakistan). After the partition of India and Pakistan, the Indian elements of the Staff College, Quetta led by Colonel S D Verma moved to India. Promoted Brigadier and appointed as the First Commandant, Verma chose Wellington as the location of the Staff College in India. [3]

All EPME courses include fitness and drill and ceremony components as well as formal lectures and academic research projects. All Air Force EPME courses have been approved for college credit in the Leadership, Management & Military Science discipline of the service's Community College of the Air Force Associate in Applied Science degree programs.
The University Charter was created in October 1991 by Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 5000.57. Originally a loose consortium of existing training commands, DAU worked to standardize the training courses and establish mechanisms that allowed for centralized management of training funds for the DoD workforce.
