The Absheron Peninsula (Azerbaijani: Abşeron yarımadası) is a peninsula in Azerbaijan. It is the location of Baku , the biggest and the most populous city of the country, and the Baku Metropolitan Area, with its satellite cities Sumqayit and Khyrdalan .
On 31 August 1990, Baku Airport gained international status and opened up for flights outside of the Soviet Union, which dissolved a year later in 1991. In October 1997, the presentation of a new passenger terminal was held, which was attended by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev .

The district is home to the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, busiest airport in the Caucasus, and one of the busiest airports in post-Soviet countries and West Asia.

Administratively, Chilov Island belongs to the Khazar district of Baku. The island is 10 km (6 mi) across and has an irregular shape with various headlands and inlets. Its highest elevation is 8 metres (26 ft).
