The Confederate Monument in Liberty, Mississippi, United States is a monument dedicated to Confederate soldiers from Amite County, Mississippi who died in the American Civil War. Dedicated in 1871, it is the first Confederate monument to be erected in Mississippi and one of the earliest such monuments in the United States.
The 7th Regiment was first organized for state service in April, 1861 [1] and was sent to the Mississippi Gulf Coast by Governor John J. Pettus for coastal defense. On September 25, 1861 the Regiment was reassigned to Confederate service with an original strength of 911 officers and men. [2]
During the Civil War, Captain George H. Tichenor married Margaret Anne Drane at the Liberty Baptist Church; Tichenor developed an antiseptic to treat wounds suffered by soldiers in the war. [3] By the end of the war, 279 men from Amite County had died for the Confederate cause. Amite County was not in a theater of war.

The Amite County Courthouse in Liberty is the oldest in Mississippi. Erected in 1839, the courthouse was enlarged and modernized in 1936. [4] It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Amite Female Seminary (also known as the 'Little Red Schoolhouse'), built in 1853, was a girls finishing school located in Liberty.
After being reorganized at Enterprise, Mississippi, and placed under the command of General Claudius W. Sears, the battalion took part in the Atlanta campaign and Hood’s Tennessee campaign. The remnants of the 7th Battalion were ordered to Mobile, Alabama in February, 1865, and surrendered on April 8th, 1865 after the Battle of Spanish Fort .

The 4th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry unit of the Confederate States Army in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. The 4th Regiment was formed by combining various cavalry companies into one consolidated regiment in the autumn of 1862. [ 1 ]
