The airport is located 31 kilometres (19 miles) northwest of downtown Dammam and is named after the former King of Saudi Arabia, Fahd ibn Abdulaziz (1921–2005). The airport serves the entire Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and is one of the four primary international airports in the kingdom.
New Madinah airport test operations began on 12 April 2015. A Saudia domestic flight coming from Riyadh landed at 11 a.m. at the new Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, marking the start of the airport's test run operations. Flight SV1435 was the first to land at the airport.

In 1945, Al-Ahsa International Airport was originally built as an airstrip. [4] In 1985, the airport was upgraded with a short runway, serving as an alternative landing ground to King Fahd International Airport. [5] During Operation Desert Shield and the Gulf War in 1991, it served as an air base for the French Air Force.
The Dammam metropolitan area, or Greater Dammam, is the largest metropolitan area in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. It consists of "The Triplet Cities" of Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran, Qatif and their vicinities. It had a population of 2,742,800 as of the 2022 census. [1]
The airport has two levels, a ground level and an upper level. A royal terminal also exists next to the main airport building where heads of state and other high-ranking VIP visitors are received. On the ground level, before security check and outside of the arrivals area, there are two coffee shops and a small gift shop.
It was renamed Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz International Airport by royal decree by King Abdullah on 5 July 2012 in memory of former Crown Prince Naif who died in June 2012. [ 4 ] [ 3 ] Prince Sultan , then crown prince and minister of defense and aviation, launched an expansion project of the royal terminal at the airport in 2003.
