The first two games are based on Games Workshop's 1995 board game Warhammer Quest, which itself is based on the tabletop wargame Warhammer. Silver Tower is based on the 2016 sequel board game of the same name.
The included quest featured the heroes being pitted against the Lichemaster, a powerful necromancer. Contrary to popular belief, the Lichemaster did not appear in the original HeroQuest game. Instead, this character is loosely based on Heinrich Kemmler, a necromancer from the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Lichemaster campaign.
