A UPC barcode. The Universal Product Code (UPC or UPC code) is a barcode symbology that is used worldwide for tracking trade items in stores.. The chosen symbology has bars (or spaces) of exactly 1, 2, 3, or 4 units wide each; each decimal digit to be encoded consists of two bars and two spaces chosen to have a total width of 7 units, in both an "even" and an "odd" parity form, which enables ...
The two wide bars, out of five possible positions, encode a number between 1 and 10 using a two-out-of-five code with the following numeric equivalence: 1, 2, 4, 7, 0. The numbers are summed together. For example, the number 6 is encoded NWWNN, with wide bars occupying the positions for 2 and 4 (2+4=6).
Two out of every five bars or spaces are wide, giving the name "2 of 5", and each pair has a consistent width. The wide lines form a two-out-of-five code with consecutive values of 1, 2, 4, 7, and 0, where the code 0 is assigned to the value of 11. This is similar to the POSTNET bar code. Digits 01 23 45 67 89 encoded in ITF: a = quiet zones
Codabar is a linear barcode symbology developed in 1972 by Pitney Bowes Corp. [1] It and its variants are also known as Codeabar, Ames Code, NW-7, Monarch, Code 2 of 7, Rationalized Codabar, ANSI/AIM BC3-1995 or USD-4.
The decode table has 15 entries because the symbols with two wide bars (1, 4 and 5) are listed twice. Assuming narrow elements are one unit wide and wide elements are two units, the average digit is 7.8 units. This is better than codes with a larger repertoire like Codabar (10 units) or Code 39 (11 units), but not quit
In 1974, the Uniform Code Council (UCC) was founded to administer the standard. [1] On 26 June 1974, a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum became the first ever product with a barcode to be scanned in a shop. [1] [3] In 1976, the original 12-digit code was expanded to 13 digits, which allowed the identification system to be used outside the U.S.
