Whitehall is in northwestern Muskegon County, about 5 miles (8.0 km) inland from Lake Michigan. White Lake originally emptied into Lake Michigan through a natural channel (see Logging the White: The White Lake Lumber Industry: 1837-1900 by Daniel J. Yakes, Ph. D. and Steven S. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Whitehall Township has a total area of 9.4 square miles (24 km 2), of which 9.1 square miles (24 km 2) are land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km 2), or 3.42%, are water. [1] The White River crosses the northwestern part of the township, entering White Lake, an arm of Lake Michigan, at Whitehall city.
The city of Whitehall, Whitehall Township, and Fruitland Township are on the south side of the lake. The unincorporated community of Wabaningo is situated where the lake flows through a short navigation channel into Lake Michigan at 43°22′31″N 86°25′36″W / 43.37528°N 86.42667°W / 43.37528; -86.
It was made a branch of the Whitehall office in 1954. [4] The office operated as a summer post office from 1897–1938, 1939–1942, 1944–1953, 1954–1965, and 1966–1999. [ 5 ] Wabaningo is no longer an acceptable name for delivery, although Sylvan Beach is an acceptable name with the Whitehall ZIP code 49461.
The lake and river discharge into Lake Michigan, near the towns of Whitehall and Montague. The White River system drains a surface area of approximately 300,000 acres (1,200 km 2) and includes about 253 miles (407 km) of streams. [4] The river has a large population of wild brook trout, which have not been fished for much of its length.
The township is in northwestern Muskegon County, bordered to the west by Lake Michigan and to the north by its inlet White Lake and the city of Whitehall.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 38.2 square miles (99 km 2), of which 36.3 square miles (94 km 2) are land and 2.0 square miles (5.2 km 2), or 5.17%, are water.
