Sacred Heart Parish can trace its history back to 1952 when Bishop William Adrian of Nashville; the Rev. Joseph P. Follman, V.F., Dean of East Tennessee; and the Rev. Christopher P. Murray, Pastor of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Knoxville determined that Knoxville needed a third Catholic parish.
The third bishop of the Diocese of Knoxville was Richard Stika from the Archdiocese of St. Louis, named by Benedict XVI in 2009. In September 2014, Stika initiated fundraising to construct a new cathedral in Knoxville. [14] Stika dedicated dedicated the new Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on March 3, 2018. [15]

The church was started by Charles B. Byers and his wife when they came to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1917 in a large two-story house on 1308 West 4th Street. Some years later the church was supported by the Virginia Mission Board. In 1921, the church moved to a brick building at the corner of West 4th Street and the University Avenue.
