The thecal sac or dural sac is the membranous sheath (theca) or tube of dura mater that surrounds the spinal cord and the cauda equina. The thecal sac contains the cerebrospinal fluid which provides nutrients and buoyancy to the spinal cord. [ 1 ]
The dura mater covering the spinal cord is known as the dural sac or thecal sac, and only has one layer (the meningeal layer) unlike cranial dura mater. The potential space between these two layers is known as the epidural space , [ 5 ] which can accumulate blood in the case of traumatic laceration to the meningeal arteries .
Lumbar puncture is done before injected contrast into the thecal sac. However, it is dangerous to do lumbar puncture in those who have raised intracranial pressure (ICP). [3] For those who had recently done lumbar puncture in one week time, there may be some cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates in the subdural space.
Dural ectasia is defined as a ballooning or outpouching of the dura with a dural volume greater than two standard deviations above the mean value in controls. [9] It is usually identified by MRI or CT Scan, [7] which can be used to distinguish it from tumors. [16]
The theca of the spinal cord is called the thecal sac, and intrathecal injections are made there or in the subarachnoid space of the skull. In human embryogenesis, the theca cells form a corpus luteum after a Graafian follicle has expelled its secondary oocyte arrested in second meiosis.
In anatomy, the epidural space is the potential space between the dura mater and vertebrae (). [1] [2]The anatomy term "epidural space" has its origin in the Ancient Greek language; ἐπί, "on, upon" + dura mater also known as "epidural cavity", "extradural space" or "peridural space".
Anterior cervical discectomy ... the lamina of the vertebra is removed or trimmed to widen the spinal canal and create more space for the spinal nerves and thecal sac
The lumbar–peritoneal shunt is inserted between two of the lumbar vertebrae of the spine into the subarachnoid space. The subarachnoid space is a spongy tissue-filled cavity that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, where cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is contained.
