Las Cruces (/ l ɑː s ˈ k r uː s ɪ s /; Spanish: [las 'kruses] "the crosses") is the second-most populous city in the U.S. state of New Mexico and the seat of Doña Ana County.As of the 2020 census, its population was 111,385, [5] making Las Cruces the most populous city in both Doña Ana County and southern New Mexico. [6]
Picacho village was the site of Picacho Station a stagecoach station of the 4th Division of the Butterfield Overland Mail from 1858 to 1861. Located in the village of Picacho, it was 6 miles west and north of Mesilla, New Mexico and 15 miles east of the Rough and Ready Station where the road passed through Picacho Pass then south to the station in the village.
Doña Ana is part of the Las Cruces Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the census [8] of 2000, there were 1,379 people, 447 households, and 363 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,885.3 inhabitants per square mile (727.9/km 2). There were 465 housing units at an average density of 635.7 per square mile (245.4/km 2).
The statistical area consists of the metropolitan areas of El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico. This CSA has a GDP of about $33 billion and would rank 58th nationally among all CSA or metro areas. [3] The total land area of the El Paso–Las Cruces combined statistical area is 9,402 sq. mi.
