According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 29.2 square miles (75.5 km 2), of which 21.3 square miles (55.1 km 2) is land and 7.9 square miles (20.4 km 2), or 27.00%, is water. [1] The southern half of the city of Detroit Lakes is within this township geographically but is a separate entity.
