It was established with the establishment of University of Ceylon in 1942. Initially, it functioned as faculties of Arts and Oriental Studies.
The first Faculty to be established was the Faculty of Arts. The Departments of Law and Oriental Studies functioned separately but have since come under the Faculty of Arts. Since then, eight other faculties have been added. The latest addition is the Faculty of Management, established in 2015.
