It debuted in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship and was known in 2009 and 2010 as the Quail Hollow Championship. From 2004–06 and 2011–13, the tournament ended in a playoff. Additionally, the event has one of the tougher finishes on tour with 16, 17, and 18, commonly known as the "Green Mile," often ranked among the PGA Tour's toughest holes.
The decision to take Quail Hollow’s three most famous — and dangerous — holes and move them to the middle of the back nine makes pragmatic sense, but will feel odd to those who know the course.
The 2017 PGA Championship was the 99th PGA Championship, held August 10–13 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. This was the first major at Quail Hollow, which is a regular stop on the PGA Tour. Early in the week of the tournament, it was announced that the championship will be held in May beginning in 2019. The first nine holes were completed in 1962 while the second nine opened to the public in 1975. [1] The course architect, George Cobb (1914-1986), in addition to being the co-designer of Augusta National's par 3 course, [2] is also the architect for over 100 other courses in the southeast US to include East Lake in Atlanta GA, Quail Hollow in Charlotte NC and Sea Pines in Hilton Head SC.
