Gwalior Light Railway (GLR) or Maharaja Railway [3] was a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow-gauge railway network in Gwalior. It was set up for Gwalior State during the times of British India . [ 4 ] Until its closure in 2020, the railway was the longest 2 ft ( 610 mm ) gauge railway in the world.
In 1899, The 119.7 kilometres (74.4 mi) long Gwalior–Shivpuri line was opened by Schindia State railway as a light rail. Later it was transferred to Gwalior Light Railway. [3] The light rail line used to run via Kampoo, Panihar, Ghatigaon, Mohana, Mansapoorah, Satanwara, Shivpuri, Kolaras & Badarwas.
Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia laid a light narrow gauge rail line in his territory in 1899 between Gwalior-Bhind, Gwalior-Shivpuri, and in 1904 from Gwalior to Sabalgarh and in 1909 from Sabalgarh to Sheopur Kalan, which became known as Gwalior Light Railway. The Gwalior narrow-gauge track was the narrowest in India. [2]

Kailaras railway station (KQS) of North Central Railway zone serves the city. Kailaras has been connected via historical Gwalior Light Railway line built during Gwalior State. It has now been converted to broad gauge line which now connects it to Gwalior. Three trains run daily from Kailaras to Gwalior which cover distance of 70 kms.
