Williams is the author of five novels. Her first novel, State of Grace (1973), was nominated for a National Book Award for Fiction, and her fourth novel, The Quick and the Dead (2002), was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Her first collection of short stories, Taking Care, was published in 1982.

The story was written in 1941 while Williams was residing in New Orleans, Louisiana, and collected first in Hard Candy: A Book of Stories (1954). [5]Williams's short story “Hard Candy”, begun in 1949 and completed in 1953, is a variation on the narrative and themes presented in “The Mysteries of Joy Rio.” [6] [7]
The novel received positive reviews at the time of publication, [2] and has continued to receive praise in the following decades. [3]American author Paul Lisicky has said he "fell in love" with the book while attending graduate school and that it influenced his own novel, Lawnboy.
