The history of the World Championship goes back to the beginnings of volleyball as a professional, high level sport. One of the first concrete measures taken by the FIVB after its foundation in 1947 was the establishment of an international competition involving teams from more than one continent.
Before 2014, the United States women's national volleyball team had achieved second place six times in major competitions (1967 World Women's Volleyball Championship, 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, 2002 World Women's Volleyball Championship, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 2011 World Cup, 2012 London Olympic Games) but had never reached the top.
The FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship is an international volleyball competition established in 1952. It is contested by the women's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the sport's global governing body. The tournament has taken place every four years.
