Islam spread rapidly in Kampung Tanjong Maya, thanks in large part to the efforts of Muslim travellers. One of the key figures was Haji Ahmad, also known as Haji Ahmad Sagun, from Taif, Saudi Arabia. In the 1880s, he constructed a small mosque, or surau, in the village. This mosque was the first in the area and the second in the Tutong District.
