The Aeritalia G.222 (formerly Fiat Aviazione, later Alenia Aeronautica) is a medium-sized STOL military transport aircraft. It was developed to meet a NATO Basic Military Requirement 4 ; accordingly, it was originally designed with lift engines for a V/STOL capability, but these were never fitted to production aircraft.
Aeritalia was created during 1969 by the merger of Aerfer and Fiat Aviazione's aviation businesses. [1] [2]In response to a NATO-issued specification for a V/STOL transport aircraft (NATO Basic Military Requirement 4), Fiat's design team, led by Giuseppe Gabrielli, produced a design to meet this requirement, designated G.222. [3]

The Alenia C-27J Spartan [3] is a military transport aircraft developed and manufactured by Leonardo's Aircraft Division (formerly Alenia Aermacchi until 2016). [4] It is an advanced derivative of the former Alenia Aeronautica's earlier G.222 (C-27A Spartan in U.S. service), equipped with the engines and various other systems also used on the larger Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules.
