The Grand Island Range Lights were lit first in 1868. [1] The original front range light was a wooden pyramid that held a sixth-order Fresnel lens. [1] The original rear range light was a sixth-order Fresnel lens in a wooden tower atop a frame keeper's house, [5] 500 feet (150 m) to the rear of the front range light.
Due to erosion, the light was decommissioned in 1918. The tower was disassembled in 1921, and reassembled on Gasparilla Island in 1927. However, the light was not lit until 1932, when it began service as the rear entrance range light for Port Boca Grande, with the front entrance range light approximately one mile off shore in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Burnt Island Light, built in 1821, is the second oldest surviving lighthouse in Maine. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It hosts a living history museum run by the state Department of Marine Resources. [ 4 ] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Burnt Island Light Station on November 23, 1977.
